Shopping in Mauritius can be quite a nice experience depending on what you are looking for.

 

Souvenirs

The best place to go for souvenirs is the Market of Port-Louis. You will find an extensive selection of spices, wooden handicraft, t-shirts or dodo souvenirs.  Adjacent is the vegetables, meat and fish market which is a great place to go if you are looking for local ingredients. There are also a lot of small tourist shops in the area; However, you need to bargain with the seller and really experience the Mauritian way of doing business.

The Caudan Waterfront has a lot of shops and also features a specialised handicraft department where you will be able to find a large collection of souvenirs and gifts. There is also a very large variety of shops selling local and International designer clothes and jewellery.

Mauritius is quite famous for its handicrafted timber ship modelling industry.  These are built based from the real plans of historical vessels which navigated in the Indian Ocean centuries ago. There are great models available and the accuracy and craftmanship is amazing. Teak is usually used to build these models.

The Mauritian Glass Gallery located in Phoenix also has a shop in Caudan.  They have a very big selection of individualized glass blown items and accessories with a great artistic input.

 

Textile

Mauritius is world known for the great quality of its textile industry and all the famous and most exquisite brands usually get their products manufactured from Mauritius.

There are some very nice shops in Mauritius such as Karl Keiser, Cerrutti, Hugo Boss or Diesel amongst others. There are also some other famous local brands such as Harris Wilson or Cafe Cotton which also have stores in Europe.

You will also find a wide range of clothes and souvenirs at the open market of Quatre-Bornes which is open on Wednesdays and Sundays.

 

Jewellery and Liquor

The diamond industry is fast growing in Mauritius and there are some interesting diamond shops which offer tax free shopping in Floreal.

Mauritius is also famous for its local Rhum and these are available at the Duty-Free shops or local supermarkets. They are great to make cocktails or to be sipped as an apperitif or digestif. Phoenix or the Blue Marlin are the most sought after local beers and are available at all shops.
